What a thumbnail download is useful for
A Reel's cover is the frame people see in the grid and in search. Creators often save covers to review how a feed looks as a whole, to compare thumbnails that performed well, or to make a recap post. Researchers use covers to document content without storing a full video.
The image is the cover that Instagram generated or the creator chose. If a creator picked a custom cover, that is what you get.
Using covers responsibly
A cover is still the creator's work. Keep it for your own reference unless you have permission to publish it. If you want the actual video, use the Reels downloader, which also offers the thumbnail as a side option.
Cover sizes and what to expect
A Reel is shot in a tall 9:16 frame, so its cover is normally a tall image about 1080 pixels wide. Instagram's grid then crops it to a 3:4 or square preview, which is why a cover can look different on the profile than the file you download. The download is the uncropped frame, so everything the creator placed in the frame is there.
If you are designing your own covers, keep titles and faces in the middle of the frame so the cropped grid preview still reads well, and leave a margin near the edges. Looking at a few well-performing covers from your niche is a quick way to see what works.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the Instagram Thumbnail Downloader.
Can I download a Reel thumbnail?
Yes. Paste the Reel link here and press Get Thumbnail, then download the image as a JPG.
Is the thumbnail full resolution?
It is the largest cover image Instagram provides for that post, not the small preview used in the grid.
Does this work for photo posts?
Yes, but a photo post has no separate cover. Use the photo downloader to get all its images.
Do custom covers download too?
Yes. If the creator chose a custom cover frame, that is the image you get.
What size is an Instagram Reel thumbnail?
A Reel cover is a tall 9:16 frame, normally about 1080 pixels wide. The profile grid crops it, so the file you download is taller than the tile you see on the profile.
