Why the profile picture in the app looks so small

Instagram shows profile pictures as small circles, and tapping one usually enlarges it only slightly. The platform stores a much larger version, up to 1080 pixels square. This tool asks for that larger file, so you can see details such as logos or faces that disappear in the app view.

If the account has never uploaded a high-resolution picture, the large version may only be a little bigger than the thumbnail. You get the best version that exists.

Good uses for a DP downloader

People use it to check which account is genuine by comparing profile pictures, to save a contact's picture with their consent, or to reference a brand's logo. It is not a way to reach private content; a private account's picture is available because Instagram shows it publicly, and nothing else about the account is exposed.

A profile picture is a personal image. Do not use someone's picture to impersonate them, and do not reuse it commercially without their permission.

Sizes, circles and cropping

Instagram displays profile pictures inside a circle, but the file it stores is a square. When you download a DP you receive that square, so the corners are part of the image and the circle crop is applied only when it is shown. If you want to use the picture as an avatar somewhere else, place the circle crop over the middle of the square and the face or logo will normally stay centred.

The stored sizes are small versions for lists, a medium one for the profile header and a large one that is the source of the others. Because the large version is requested here, a downloaded picture is usually several times the pixel count of what you see in the app. That is useful for printing, for checking fine detail and for spotting fake accounts that reuse a low-quality copy.
