How to view Instagram stories anonymously
Every time you watch a story in Instagram, your name goes into the owner's viewer list. If you would rather not be listed, there are a few honest options and a lot of bad advice.
Use a story viewer that does not log in
The simplest method is a web tool that fetches stories for you. Because you are not signed in to Instagram on that site, there is no account to add to the list. Enter the username in the story downloader and the live stories load. Only public accounts work.
You can then view the story on the page and, if you want, save it. Stories expire after 24 hours, so saving is the only way to keep one.
Methods that do not work
Airplane mode tricks stopped working long ago, because the app syncs views when you reconnect. Opening a story from a notification still counts as a view. Be wary of any site that asks for your Instagram password; it is almost certainly a way to take over your account. A real viewer never needs your login.
Private accounts
No tool can show you the stories of a private account. Those are limited to approved followers, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling something. Follow the account and wait for approval, or ask the person to share.
Be considerate
Watching without being seen is fine for browsing public figures or brands. For personal accounts, think about why you want to be invisible. Saving and reposting someone's story without their permission is a bigger step than viewing it.
