Instagram Reel won't download? Eight fixes that work
A download that fails almost always has a simple cause. Work down this list in order; the first few fix most cases.
1. Check that you copied the right link
The link must point at the Reel itself, with /reel/ or /p/ in it. A link to a profile or to your feed will not work. Open the Reel, tap the share icon and choose Copy link, then paste it again.
2. Make sure the account is public
A downloader cannot see private posts, because it never logs in. If you can only watch the Reel when you are signed in and following the account, it is private. Ask the owner to send it to you.
3. Check the Reel still exists
Deleted, archived and age- or region-restricted Reels cannot be fetched. Open the link in a private browser window. If Instagram shows an error or asks you to log in, the Reel is not public.
4. Try the H.264 quality
If the file downloads but will not play, the codec is probably the problem. Choose the H.264 version from the quality list instead of the highest quality.
5. Wait a minute and retry
Instagram sometimes limits requests for a short time. If you see a message about being busy or too many requests, wait a minute and try again. Do not press the button repeatedly, as that makes it worse.
6. Use the right browser
On iPhone, use Safari. Many in-app browsers inside other apps block file downloads. On Android, use Chrome or Firefox, and open the downloader outside the Instagram app.
7. Free up storage and disable data saver
A full phone makes the download fail halfway. Data Saver and Low Data Mode can also interrupt large files, so turn them off for a moment.
8. Fetch the Reel again
Links to the video file expire after a while. If you left the result open for hours, paste the link again to get a fresh one.
